Antagonist is the character that adds opposition to the goals of the main character or protagonist.
Sometimes the hero of the story is a bad guy, like Macbeth. In this case the antagonist would be Macduff, the man who tries to oppose him, so simply saying antagonist is the bad guy isn’t really accurate.
In The Gamma People, the antagonist is clear – Mad Scientist Bronski. It’s about two men on a train, an American and a Brit on their way somewhere when their train car gets uncoupled and oddly enough rerouted by kids into the fake European country of Gudavia. Once there, the foreigners really show their butts as spoiled foreigners who would be perfectly happy if only everybody would simply give them what they want which amounts to a car to get out of there. That’s seriously their goal.

But the Brit is attacked by these goons and the plot thickens. It seems a famous scientist who had dropped off the map is there experimenting on people shooting the children up with…can you guess???? GAMMA RAYS! The result is it either turns them in to child prodigy geniuses or...you guessed it…GOONS!

Once they find out all this, our protagonists become a little less self-centered and decide they have to help the town’s folk out and hey take on the mad scientist. Of course they win and the day is saved and there’s a big dance scene at the end.

It’s all a bit much. This could have been a n excellent movie had the tone been more balanced. It goes from humorous to attempting to really be scary and even though these two emotions are not exclusive…a film should know up front if its humor is coming from an intentional place or from just being ridiculous. And so much of this film is just ridiculous. There’s even a kid named Hugo who is just a horrible brat, but of course in the end he saves the day. Too predictable.
But one thing I will say, the antagonist is merciless and interesting. Hmm…Gamma Rays to make me a genius…tempting!
