It's the fashion here in Asia to begin things from your country with the first letter...for example J-Pop is short for Japanese Popular Music. So of course there's also K-Pop. I've actually seen way too many K-Pop concerts...2A.M., CNBLU, MBLAQ, Wonder Girls etc.... ironically enough while I was living in Taiwan, go figure.
Anyway, K-Hor is my attempted humorous shortening of K-Horror. I know, not very original, but since I was planning on putting this on Wednesdays, I couldn't resist putting the word Hor with the word Humpday. Get it?
So why does K-Horror deserve their own day of the month? I mean when we think Asian Horror...we usually think Japanese, right? Japanese Horror, Chinese Martial Arts, and Korean Gangster movies... that's the ticket. But I happen to think Korea has turned out some of the most interesting Horror/Thrillers in the genre. They are highly underrated.
So every Wednesday, I shall be diving into some old favorites and actually into some new ones I have yet to view. And yes, like all the other days...I've added some clunkers in just for fun. I mean...I can't wait to get to films like Chaw (while you may think this one's about the dangers of dipping, it's basically Jaws but with a huge wild pig. Get the Konglish name now???) and Vampire Cop Ricky . This is my third time living in Korea over many years and every time I have made the diligent effort to avoid this movie because it just looks and sounds so incredibly ridiculous. But it's a big ole cult classic here in The Land of the Morning Calm, so what the hell do I know?
If you've never seen a Korean movie...don't start with any of these. Start with Old Boy. Remember, these aren't the best movies I'm reviewing here. These are all thrillers and horror flicks. Old Boy should be on this list, but I figure it's so iconic, most film fans know about it. Besides that, I'm afraid if I started writing about it, I wouldn't be able to stop. Yeah, it's that amazing.
So sit back, grab some dried squid and mayonnaise (yeah, that's really what they eat at the cinemas here!), and enjoy some foreign chills and thrills. Sweet Screams!
